Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence

In 1982, the U.S. Department of Education established the "Blue Ribbon School of Excellence" award for schools that meet the highest standards of educational quality.  In Rhode Island, 23 schools have received this honor since 1983.  Eight of these schools (one-third of those schools honored) are Catholic schools — and two of them have received the award twice!

These schools are:

Johnston

Mercymount Country Day School
Cumberland

St. Philomena School
Portsmouth

LaSalle Academy
Providence

Bishop Hendricken High School
Warwick

Mount St. Charles Academy
Woonsocket (1993/2000)

St. Mary Academy - Bay View
East Providence (1991/2001)



NCEA "Distinguished Principals" Since 1996

Since 1996, five R.I. Catholic elementary school principals have received the annual "Distinguished Principal" award for the New England region from the National Catholic Educational Association.

The 1996 recipient, Sr. Mary Carol Gentile, ASCJ, former principal of St. Rocco School  went on to be named one of 12 national "Outstanding Principals of the Year" by the U.S. Department of Education.
